Application for Late Birth Registration

For birth registration of persons 15 years of age and older

In order that a late registration of birth may be registered in South Africa, it will be necessary to complete the following forms and provide the requested documentation.

The forms DHA 24 and DHA 24 / A may be obtained from this office. Other forms may be downloaded from www.sahc.org.au

It will be necessary for the applicant and the informer to appear in person in Canberra at the Mission.

  1. Completion of form DHA 24 (Notice of Birth)
  2. Completion of form DHA 288 (Affidavit in support of a notice of birth)
  3. Completion of form BI-529 by the applicant (Determination of citizenship)
  4. Form DHA 24 / A: The applicant's finger prints
  5. Form DHA 24 / A: The informant's finger prints
  6. Two coloured or black and white passport sized photo of the applicant, certified at the back

The above forms must be submitted together with the original copies of the following documents at the time of the interview:

  1. Certified copy of the informant's ID / passport. The copies must be sighted by Police / Justice of Peace
  2. Certified copy of the original full birth certificate.
  3. Marriage certificate (if applicable).
  4. Proof of parent's South African citizenship.
  5. Proof of parent's current citizenship (if applicable).
  6. Proof of dual citizenship (if applicable).
  7. Any supporting documentation that will assist in the birth registration.

NOTE: The late birth registration is done free of charge.

Return Postage

  • For applications originating from within Australia - a Self-addressed Registered Post Envelope (only one envelope per family) OR a Postal Money Order or Bank Cheque for the amount of AUD 15.00 made payable to the South African High Commission.
  • For applications originating from outside Australia a Bank Draft for the amount of
    AUD 15.00 made payable to the South African High Commission.

Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted. Incorrect payment will not be accepted; in case of incorrect payment the cheque or postal money order will be returned to applicant.

A processing period of approximately NINE months is involved. Kindly double the self-addressed return envelopes or postage fee if you require that the above originals are sighted and returned upon receipt at this Mission. Allow fifteen working days from receipt for return of original documents.
