Determination / confirmation of South African status

Persons can apply for the confirmation of their South African status - this may include Citizenship or Permanent Residency.

These applications are referred to the South African Department of Home Affairs where the information will be checked against the National Population Register.

Processing time is approximately 6 to 12 months.

Completion of forms BI-829 and BI-529 in full is required.

Certified copies of following documents to be included which will assist in finalization of the application:

  1. Birth Certificate.
  2. South African Identity Document/Passport.
  3. Foreign citizenship certificate/Letter of retention of South African citizenship.

It is strongly recommended that any available supporting documentation be included. This may be in the form of a copy of the birth certificate, identity document, passport or any document that will assist in expediting the finalization of the application.

Fee: Non-refundable fee of AUD 8.00 per application.

Payment must be in Australian Dollars (AUD) made out to the "South African High Commission" by way of Postal Money Order or Bank Cheque.

Personal cheques or credit cards are NOT accepted. Incorrect payment will not be accepted; in case of incorrect payment the cheque or postal money order will be returned to applicant.

  • For applications originating from within Australia - a Self-addressed Express or Registered Post Envelope (only one envelope per family).
